All Saints Hampton is twinned with Todos Santos in Nacala Port, Mozambique. The link is supported by the ALMA Partnership (London, Mozambique and Angola), with a base in Diocesan House in London.
Our two parishes could be seen as complementary. Todos Santos has a young congregation, with dynamic leadership from the Mothers Union. The parish ALMA reps, Richard and Bobbie Ennals, visited in 2007, when Richard was working in Maputo. The school which shares the site with the church now has 900 students, and is expanding to cover secondary as well as primary levels. All Saints Hampton contributed to funding the wall which protects the site from flooding.
The main language in Mozambique is Portuguese, which adds to the complications of communication. Email and even Skype are proving useful. Thanks to Rev Dr. John Seymour of Twyford School in Ealing, students from Mozambique are participating in a model UN debate in Westminster on 9th September, 2013.
Mozambique is poor, but now peaceful and growing. One local problem at present is a shortage of water while a new pipe is being laid from a reservoir. Todos Santos is at the centre of the community, with ambitious plans to open a health centre.
February 2017: We were pleased to meet Bishop Manuel of Mozambique who has been visiting the UK recently and came to stay with our vicar Gareth. Bishop Manuel spoke to us at a joint meeting with St Mary’s Hampton and St James’ Hampton Hill. It was encouraging to hear about his vision for the church to be a community that influences values and we look forward to strengthening our links with the parish of Todos Santos. The Bishop has made a film with Tearfund that you can see here.
